the Smith Westerns

In the world of music, 2011 has been a great year so far. Early in January The Smith westerns released their debut album "Dye it Blonde". The Chicago based group created an album of 10 ex melodic T.Rex influenced rock n roll songs. The highlight track from the album is "Weekend" which is lead by an enthusiastic and energetic guitar riff. and also check out the song "Dance Away" which explores the bands more Bowie influences and in spirit of the song title has a more dancey feel then the other songs on the album.

John Maus has also added to great sounds that have been coming out this past year. He recently released "we become pitiless censors of ourselves" in which the ex: Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti band member has created a landscape of 80's nostalgic sounds with waves of distortion and reverb. His music video for "Head for the Country" captures that same vibe of 80's style. One scene even shows Maus staring lost into an old television set that is playing the movie Robo-Cop. The highlight track is "Keep Pushing On" which begins with a stuttering synthesizer riff that sounds like music from an old super nintendo game withouth even blowing the dust out of the cartridge before. The song leads into a soaring chorus that sounds like something you might of heard before in the background of the breakfeast club. There are many other highlights on the album including the mezmerizing Streetlight, the hypnotic Believer, and joy division impersonation "Quantum Leap." Hurry up and check this guy out, see him live and buy his merchandise because he will probably have to get back to his Delorean with Marty and Doc any day now.

Whitey is finally back.. and he has alot more to say than he ever has before. His first album boasted distortion heavy synth tracks like intro/into the limelight, leave them all behind, and a walk in the dark, songs that defined his sound that most likely caused him to be noticed by Justice who slotted him as an opening act back in 2007 for some shows including a new years celebration in L.A. His second album "Great shakes" that was never officially released but was leaked in its entirety built on the first album nicely and allowed him to build a bigger fan base internationally. Some of Whitey's finest song writing can be heard on great shakes with gems like "sweet words for the sour", "Wrap it up", and the super catchy "Cigarette"

After the loss of his super awesome live band that looked like the evil strokes he has had issues with record labels and finally decided to self release his third album.."Canned Laughter". The plight of his losses shows in the lyrics on canned laughter and his trademark gloomy demeanor is apparent throughout the whole album. the most reminiscent of the old whitey can be heard on the opener "Dinosaur." The track "Liars, Vipers, Jokers, and Fakes" starts off goofy but builds into a synth driven anthem. All the tracks are quite different and with this release Whitey once again demonstrates his signature style and vocals but in my opinion seems to have lost some of his swagger and edge that will slap you in the face when you listen to "wrap it up", "intro/into the limelight", "I mademyself invisible",or "just another animal" the album still shows us the work of an intelligent and creative song writer whos style and sound is very distinguishable and his own.

this is the first time I've decided to write this bands name without censoring it..hah this mini album release entitled "Jupiter" is a compilation of lush technicolor pop songs. Highlights are "Medicine" and "Boy Toy" which sounds like they would be singing in hot pink and platinum tuxedos with perfectly gelled hair combed to the side. If starbursts and skittles could be transformed into songs they'd sound like the vibrant pop music of Starfucker.

CCC uses really simple electro tricks.. buildups and one second breaks right before thowmping down the bass, but its still dumb fun. and if you like that then I recommend checking out their album minimix on their official website thats synced to some aztec/alien 80s anime.

I think these guys played some shows with the epic midnight juggernauts as well which makes me like them even more also. unforunately their album is not in the U.S. right now and its around 40 bucks to import it on Amazon.com... lame

Last night I saw Health with Mi Ami and Pictureplane in San Francisco. OK so I know everyone is talking about Health now and saying how much they love them including myself. but I just wanted to say I think these guys really surprised everyone. I mean to be honest I really wasn't expecting them to come out with songs like "die slow", "we are water" and "Severin." Its a very pleasant surprise. Pictureplane put on a great show also, I think hes still a little over everyones head but hopefully things will catch on for him and he'll gain more popularity as he tours with Health with his new album Dark rift.

If you knew me personally than youd know I've been an obsessive Whitey fan since first listen. my top two most played songs on my ipod are "Intro/ into the limelight" and "leave them all behind" the two first songs on Whitey's debut. Apparently in 2007 something went wrong in the world of Whitey as his second album was leaked and after touring in the U.S. his band split up. 2 of the members of that live band were Scott Fairbrother and Julian Shah-Taylor who moved to Hollywood and formed "Adam and Evil."

I respect these guys but I kind of wished that the original Whitey band line-up was still intact including Rory Philips and "Wildcat will" on drums. Adam & Evil sounds a little like Whitey especially "Outnumbered" and "Freaks" which both sound like they could've showed up on Whitey's second album great shakes. Good luck to you boys! I'll buy the album when it comes out!!! (work on your song titles though.. weeds? freaks??)

Mystic Mountains

Mystic Mountains is a Melbourne-based trio that represent the culminating response to Crystal Castles and that whole game-chip-generated electronic music. While Mystic Mountains play stuff that's a little less raunchy, a little more pop in structure, and a little more melodious than Crystal Castles and those affiliated with that "movement," the parallels are undeniable.

"CCCTTTT" actually is a hipster mash-up of a Crystal Castles track and the Teenagers' "Scarlett Johansson" (coincidence that I just posted about the Teenagers?) that's actually quite good.

I've had this album for a while, but have only listened to it a few times. Its both very meditative and psychedelic in nature but there are present riffs to keep your attention and so it doesn't just sound like droning noise.. it feels like it has direction.

I randomly remembered getting these for christmas from my sister... now normally one would be sorely disappointed to receive a few fast food franchise toys for christmas however these toys were different... they were awesome. the donkey kong one was a little frustrating where you had to climb the tree by spinning him around sliding him through the proper slots and then the mario maze was simply a little metal ball that you has to get through several parts of a maze..

The Music these guys make sounds like something you'd hear in an action movie maybe like transporter where an intense car chase scene is playing out and sleek black cars weeving through the crowded L.A. streets lit up at night.. They opened for Daft punk, Kavinsky, and Sebastian and others in 2007. I think these guys would put on a really Fun show.

One piece is known for its wacky and bizzare character designs and their vibrant array of color schemes on each character. The 9th movie was about how the main character (aka Luffy who has the ability to stretch like rubber) meets their new crew member "Chopper" the naive reinder with a heart of gold. The movie is slightly retarded at the beginning and it seems like something only fitting for saturday morning cartoons untill the story starts to kick-in involving a faulty doctor, a tyrant king, a pack of reindeers, cherry blossoms, and a mushroom.

One interesting thing about the movie is that it has a character that is only in this anime movie and not in the original shonen jump manga... the character is Mushurru the older brother of the fat lard king Wapol.. Mushurrus powers allow him to make poisonous mushroom spore things that explode.. but his attacks in the movie are confusing and don't seem to co-inside with that simple explanation... at the end Wapol eats his brother to gain his poison cloud powers and he turns into a big time bomb mushroom thing... thats totally normal...

Jeroen is a Dutch composer who has made a zillion soundtracks for videogames in the 80's, 90's and 00's This guy is a total geek but he is a legitimate musical genius. Back in the summer of 6th grade I fell in love with the game "Warlocked" which he made an excellent soundtrack for. Flynn diving into a Vortex

Ratatat's titles of their songs are very unique words that all seem to have some sort of odd theme... just in the way they sound.. for example on lp3 some song titles are mirando, mumtaz khan, Bird Priest, Mi Viejo, Shempi.... Well I recently made a connection that the title "Flynn" is also the last name of the main character in the aesthetically ground breaking Disney movie "Tron." ....maybe I'm just over analyzing it...

Kid Robot has both incredibly interesting graphic degisn for t-shirts hoodies/ streetwear ...(nothing I'd personally ever wear however its still fun to look at...) Their designer toys that they make are imaginative and colorful and they look as if they are almost edible candy figures... Kid Robot

Someone made an unofficial video for the new unreleased Royksopp track featuring Robyn (yes the swedish popstar who was the most popular in the U.S. in the 90's) the video is a little goofy but there are some cool moments..with the saturday night fever clips of john travolta and of some 80s movie with a girl and...a dancing robot... I bet that this will be Royksopp's next single and I bet the official video won't be as straightforward as a girl dancing with a robot...

and then the Bag Raiders Power ranger video is hilarious and totally awesome at the same time.

So Junior leaked like last saturday...and I told myself I wouldn't download it... but I did somehow... it must have been subconsciously. However I'm not a totally bad person because I will buy the hard copy because I want the hard copy... So this album has gotten alot of flak from longtime royksopp fans... I have been a fan since The understanding and I 'm not sure if I'm past that "Oh snap! a new album from Royksopp" phase yet but I greatly enjoy it... and all I can say is that many newcoming Royksopp fans will be very pleased to find "Melody A.M." and "the Understanding" ...Overall Junior is a very playful album and I feel that the idea of being young and what it is like to be young and the feelings of being young are captured well in this album as the duo intended. Also in an interveiw they said that the idea of what Junior is as an album will become more clear when the counterpart will be released in September or so...
